What is seasoning?
Seasoning a pan refers to applying a thin layer of oil to the pan to create a non-stick coating so that the food does not stick to it. It is majorly done on metal pans to seal the microscopic holes on their surface. Most of the pans available today have Teflon coating which is smooth and non-stick and hence are not required to be seasoned.
Why do pans need to be seasoned?
Your new pan like Granite Rock Pan needs to be seasoned before use. It is done because the oil fills in the minute pores on the surface of the cookware making it smooth and non-stick. Besides, oil also protects the surface of the pan from oxidation preventing it from rusting.
Advantages of seasoning
- Seasoning becomes necessary if you are using a metal pan that has a rough surface. The oil fills in the little spaces on the surface of the pan and makes it smooth and non-stick. Hence, the food will not stick to it and glide off smoothly.
- Also, seasoning protects the surface of the pan from oxidation due to excessive heat.
Disadvantages of seasoning
- Seasoning is claimed to be an easy process. However, it is still time-consuming.
- If you scrub your pans while washing, or use a dishwasher, then it is likely that the protective layer of oil will get damaged and you will have to season the cookware once again.
Does Granite Rock Pan need to be seasoned?
Granite Rock Pans come with a non-stick Teflon coating which means that they will not require any seasoning. However, some reviews do state that food sticks to these pans. Hence, it will be a good idea to season them before their first use to prevent any damage.
